Profiles' presented the Chicago Premiere of Joan Ackermann's ZARA SPOOK AND OTHER LURES. This wacky and wonderful comedy was a sensation when it premiered at the Humana Festival in 1990. The play is a hilarious look at three women competing in the "National Women's Bass Fishing Tournament" and the men in their lives. Evelyn's dream is to win the tournament with her best friend, Teale, at her side -- though she's got some stiff competition from the legendary Ramona. Evelyn's best hope may be "Rookie of the Year" honors. However, who wins the tournament could be the least of their worries as they contend with an overzealous boyfriend, asthma, a diamondback rattler, an estranged husband, a beanie shooter, cowskulls, lightning -- and ultimately facing their worst fears.
"Recommended! Kay Martinovich stirs ensemble warmth from the six well-cast actors in Profiles' local premiere. 'Zara Spook and Other Lures' is a sweet and soothing lure; it's unpretentiously graced with real folks who never talk as if they were lifted from a writer's notebook."
"This romantic romp has enough screwball laughs and countersexist wisdom to win over deli-counter anglers, as well as, hard-core cast-and-blast fans. Kay Martinovich's deft direction creates a sense of continuity that ties up the loose ends, and the cast's unexaggerated performances make us like the characters way too much to question their motives."
