The Ruffian On The Stair

The fourth production in Profiles' Dark Night Series, THE RUFFIAN ON THE STAIR was Joe Orton's first play, a dark comedy written in 1963. The story concerns a working class couple who are visited by a mysterious stranger asking for a room. But it quickly becomes apparent that the stranger may be seeking retribution for the death of his brother (also his lover) who was killed in a hit-and-run accident. As in all of Orton's plays, THE RUFFIAN ON THE STAIR examines social mores, sexuality, religion, and the English language with hilarious, yet often devastating results.

"Hothouse sexuality, creepy and dysfunctional, a menacing play with devilish turns and superb, impeccable performances!"

- Lawrence Bommer, CHICAGO TRIBUNE

"A very fine production, the cast is uniformly on Orton's bizarre wavelength!"

- Andrew Patner, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

"The cast throw themselves heart and soul into the production!"

- Jack Helbig, CHICAGO READER
